I don't care who you are, you pretty much have to read this interview with David Simon, creator of The Wire. But if you've never seen the show before or you're not done it, stop at the end of page 4. And then go watch the show.
I read that yesterday!!! Kicked myself for not having gone past the first season yet!!! That interview really makes the Wire feel like the most amazing thing ever made- from watching season 1 all I have is "it's a frigging good show."

It IS a frigging good show, but it's not until you get deep enough into the second season and beyond to see what they're really up to that you can appreciate its full glory.
