A constitutional re-play of mass production
Excellent overview by Louis Menand of Bob Dylan. Menand has some very cogent things to say about the way musicians understand themselves - or don't.

Funny, I was talking about that very same article last night with a friend. it is quite good. That new album is terribly boring. I've wanted to like all of these late Dylan albums so much but the truth is, it's inescapable not to compare them to his early stuff. I think the last Dylan album I'll consistently listen to will be Desire.

I'm not nearly the fan you are - the only one I really listen to consistently is Highway 61 Revisited. I think you could wring a great album out of Time Out Of Mind with some editing, though.

I admire Menand's admiration for Dylan's version of a kid's song.
I hate Desire.
